Attenborough, Richard
In Search of Gandhi: signed copy
Bodley Head, 1982
First edition hardcover, 229pp., colour illustrations. Signed by author on title page. Minor wear; small gouge to upper front board and dustwrapper; slightly toned upper page edges and slight edgewear to dustwrapper. Very good and professionally protected by superior non-adhesive polypropylene film. "In Search of Gandhi" is the story of the bizarre, humorous, tragic and convoluted events which Richard Attenborough experienced in the years he spent preparing for his lifelong obsession: the making of a film about the life of Mahatma Gandhi. He writes in detail about his meetings with major political figures and about his negotiations with film moguls, distributors and maharajas during numerous endeavours to raise the necessary finance. Then he describes the realization of his dream. A fascinating account supplemented with b/w and colour photographs.

Hughes, Robert
American Visions: signed copy The Epic History of Art in America
Harvill Press, 1997.
Hardcover. Signed first edition. 635pp., 323 colour and 42 monochrome illustrations. Very minor shelf wear to board and dustwrapper edges. Fine in like d/w. Writing with all the brilliance, authority and pungent wit that have distinguished his art criticism for Time magazine and his greatly acclaimed study of modern art, The Shock of the New, Robert Hughes now addresses his largest subject: the history of art in America. The intense relationship between the American people and their surroundings has been the source of a rich artistic tradition. American Visions is a consistently revealing demonstration of the many ways in which artists have expressed this pervasive connection. In nine eloquent chapters, which span the whole range of events, movements and personalities of more than three centuries, Robert Hughes shows us the myriad associations between the unique society that is America and the art it has produced.

The Science of Appearances: signed copy
Shepherd Press, Sydney, 1950.
Small quarto, 298 pp. Foxed prelims and pastedowns, spotted page edges; else very good to near fine in full red morocco. Raised bands, gilt titling. Small scrapes to head and tail of spine. Chart and transparencies in pockets at rear. Colour and monochrome plates. This is number 46 in the deluxe limited edition of 100 copies signed by the author. "Through my experience as a painter, teacher and lecturer I am fully aware of the difficulties which confront serious students of painting in their efforts to find a workable basis of the craft. To help such as these I have from time to time written down practical precepts with the idea of finally grouping them together in book form....Added to these dificulties and since it is a pioneering attempt to place the art of painting on a completely scientific basis, ai am content with all its limitations to let it wing its way with the assurance that it will provide a point of support to all the serious-minded art students of today battered and bewildered as they are in this maelstrom of aesthetic decadence impudently called 'modern art'" Max Meldrum
