Barrett, Jim
Kowmung River Discovery, History and Development
Jim Barrett, Glenbrook, NSW, Australia, 1993.
First edition. Octavo; paperback; 86pp., with many maps and monochrome illustrations. rubbing to covers with edgewear; sticker ghost and one or two small scratches. Very good. The Kowmung river has its start south of the Jenolan Caves area where it traverses wild and rugged country, passing through plateaus of over 4,000 feet in height before joining Cox's River at its headwaters. The first white man to see the Kowmung was Francis Barralier in 1802, followed by George Caley in 1806; but it wasn't until 1833 that W.R. Govett finally succeeded in surveying the entire area, including the Kowmung, especially the lower 24 mile stretch. Aboriginal assistants to these exploring parties have contributed to some confusion regarding the naming of the river, but then again, none of the early mappers were accompanied by the local Gundunggurra tribespeople for whom the river is known as the Barnalay. In 1833, H.C. White named the river Kowmung after questioning his Dharug and Tharawal guides, and this name may have been either their own term for what the Gunduggura called Barnalay, or their own tribal word for the Cox: the real reason is lost in time. In the years since then, the river has been the site of cattle speculation and various attempts to forge stock routes; the logging range of cedar cutters; and the location of limestone mines. Nowadays it is best known for its spectacular bushwalking possibilities, most of which are attempted only by the very experienced.

Belbin, Phil, & David Burke
Full Steam Across the Mountains
Methuen Australia Pty. Ltd., Sydney NSW, 1982.
Reprint: quarto; hardcover; tan boards with white spine titling and endpaper maps; 144pp., with full-colour and monochrome photographic illustrations. Minor wear; board corners lightly scraped; toning and faint spotting to the text block edges. Very good to near fine. Wrapper now professionally protected by superior non-adhesive polypropylene film. Rails were the path and steam was the goliath that conquered the Blue Mountains making the rich western plains accessible. Puffing up the famous zigzags, thundering along the ridges, sending billowing clouds of smoke up against the clean mountain sky, frantically recharging air brakes on treacherous downgrades, for nearly ninety years the iron horse was supreme. One of the greatest achievements of nineteenth century engineering was the building of Australia's loftiest and steepest mainline. The line across the Blue Mountains was the greatest construction challenge the country had yet faced and in an age when shovel, wheelbarrows, picks and sheer brute force were the tools used, the achievement is astounding. John Whitton, an engineering genius, was the man responsible for elevating the line from the coastal plain to the plateau of the mountains and then bringing the trains down again. Despite almost overwhelming odds - political, financial and topographical - he succeeded. This is the story of his achievement.

Jarvis, Jadwiga
The Wayzgoose Affair
Wayzgoose Press, Katoomba, 2007.
Folio hardcover; black Toyo Saifu cloth boards with blind-stamped spine titling and upper board insignia, endpapers illustrated in colour; 177pp., colour illustrations. Limited edition of 500 copies. Fine in red and black dustwrapper. This is the story of the Wayzgoose Press, a prestigious small press established in the Blue Mountains in 1985. To date the press has produced 20 books and 50 broadsides in limited editions of between 10 and 50 copies, as well as numerous ephemeral paintings. All texts are hand set, illustrated with relief imagery (wood engravings, linocuts, monoprints and collographs), printed on a proof press and hand-bound or hand-assembled and housed in a purpose-made box. A small number of copies from each edition are enclosed in a designer binding which, like the so called edition bindings, have very little in common with traditional book binding. Every aspect of production, sometimes even the writing, takes place in house, or, more precisely, in shed. 'Wayzgoose' is an old English word referring to the annual printers' picnic - as ironically the press found that printing by hand 'ain't no picnic'. Incorporated into its production - the book artists armoury - typography, layout, colour, design, illustrations, textures, binding etc., are all used to give the printed word an individual presence through a tangible, creative and germane setting. A love of black humour and the occasional profanities (Ockers) add textual meat and an element of adventure to their publications, together with the visual puns, the symbolism, literary references and the vibrant colour. In compiling the Wayzgoose Affair, the author has used excerpts from her correspondence with friends, colleagues, supporters and occasionally detractors, to compile an instructive and amusing story. She records the setbacks, successes, irritations and even disasters with a wicked wit and an often critical perceptiveness.

Kay, Phillip
The Far-Famed Blue Mountains of Harry Phillips
Megalong Books/Second Back Row Press, Leura NSW, 1985.
Quarto; paperback, with photographic endpapers; 96pp., with many monochrome illustrations. Minor wear; slight wear to edges and corners. Very good. Phillips, photographer, printer and publisher, produced at least eighty photographic books in the period 1909-1944, principally of Sydney and the Blue Mountains. During this period, photographic albums showing views of the local scenery around holiday spots were quite the fashion, reaching their pinnacle during the 1920s; Harry Phillips, with his collections of images from Katoomba and the Blue Mountains generally, turned this tourist catch-penny publishing game into an art form. Credited with single-handedly boosting the Blue Mountains' profile as a tourist destination across the world and of innovating such various phenomena as the Scenic Railway and the career of Frank Hurley (who was a devotee), Harry Phillips' name has come to be synonymous with the place in which he chose to work.

Langdon, Mark
Conquering the Blue Mountains
Eveleigh Press, Matraville NSW, 2006.
Quarto; hardcover, with illustrated boards and endpapers; 147pp., monochrome plates and a folding map. Minor wear only; near fine in like dustwrapper now professionally protected by superior non-adhesive polypropylene film. The first railway in New South Wales was opened in September 1855 between Sydney and Parramatta with the intention that it would be extended to Goulburn in the south and across the Blue Mountains to Bathurst in the west. The mountains had seemed an impenetrable barrier and initial reactions were that the building of a line was impracticable. Surveys however identified a suitable route and in 1863 work commenced. The author documents the planning and construction, the many difficulties encountered and the innovative solutions effected. The book includes many photographs of trains, locations and the personalities involved.

Prineas, Peter, & Henry Gold
Wild Places Wilderness in Eastern New South Wales
Colong Foundation, Sydney NSW, 1997.
Second edition: octavo; paperback; 287pp., with maps and many monochrome illustrations. Mild wear only. Near fine. "Wild Places is an authoritative history of wilderness and the wilderness movement in eastern New South Wales. It has been updated in detail since the passing of the Wilderness Act in 1987, and is excellent reading for those who care about wilderness in NSW. The first few chapters review the history of man's relationship with wilderness in NSW. Starting from the aboriginal peoples, it traces the arrival of white men, the exploration and expansion of the colony, the subsequent development of interest in conservation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, finishing with the battles of the '60s and '70s and the eventual passing of the Wilderness Act. Each of the major wilderness areas has a chapter going into detail on history, landform, geology and flora, although fauna is less well represented. The history in particular is well researched and written. The text is accompanied by detailed maps of each area, and Henry Gold's black and white photographs. The photos are superb, and alone are worth the price of the book." - Tom Brennan - Bushwalking NSW

Pynor, Vivian
Scenic Railway Katoomba and the Mountain Devil The Steepest Incline Railway in the World
Tyrells, Sydney, nd
Facsimile stapled edition of booklet originally printed in the 1930s. Illustrated in both monochrome and colour. Blue card cover with illustration. Very minor edgewear; otherwise near fine. "The Railway, which is 1,300 feet in length on a grade varying from 15 deg. to 50, was first opened by J B North in 1882, for the purpose of hauling coal and the first coal was taken to Sydney by bullock wagon... Many tourists who had previously been deterred from attempting the journey along the Federal Pass by the terrific climb at either end, were attracted by the prospect of quick and safe transport to the valley. Owing to its unique scenic beauty it proved so popular that a special passenger truck of peculiar design was built, it is so constructed as to give the persons travelling a level seat on the steepest grade... The car carries 15 passengers and as it moves off slowly and enters the tunnel you get your first thrill. The narrow walls of the canyon rise towering to right and left, glimmering coldly black where the damp moss does not cling; the air is cool and pleasant after the hot sun outside and the vegetation that you see through the mouth of the tunnel looks too vivid to be real like a stage set... Now you are out again in the sunlight, still descending, slowly and surely, that incredible incline. Brilliant-hued Mountain Parrots swoop chattering through the undergrowth, and a Kookaburra laughs on a nearby bough. As you are travelling at only seven miles per hour you have plenty of time to look about you. Thick vegetation, slender trees and wavering fern fronds encompass you till you reach the landing stage near the pit mouth, with the cliffs 650 feet above. Here you may see skips of coal waiting to be hauled up the incline that you have just come down.".

Wilson, Gavin
Picturing the Great Divide Visions from Australia's Blue Mountains
Blue Mountains Cultural Centre, 2012.
Large square quarto gate-fold paperback; 117pp., colour and monochrome illustrations. Minor wear only; near fine. In conjunction with the opening of Katoomba's new Cultural Centre, an exhibition was held to demonstrate the inspiration which the Blue Mountains region has provided to many artists working in a variety of mediums across the years, and this is the catalogue which was produced in conjunction with it. Of the 102 works selected here, the imagery spans a 'great divide' of years, from the days of early settlement, to the work of Harry Phillips in the 1930s, to the recent savage iconography of the late Adam Cullen. This is an excellent celebration of the Blue Mountains' rugged beauty and the creative response that it has inspired.
